Dangers of Obesity

Obesity is a serious health problem; it means that you have too much body fat and it is much greater than what is healthy. Obesity occurs over time when you consume more calories than you burn. Individuals who are obese have a 50 to 100% increased risk of premature death from all causes, compared to individuals with a healthy weight. About 65% of Americans are either overweight or obese. Being obese puts you at a higher risk for health problems such as: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, gallstones and breathing problems like: asthma and sleep apnea.

Heart disease is increased in persons who are overweight or obese.obesity also raises blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels and lowers HDL “the good” cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is linked with lower heart disease and stroke risk, so reducing it tends to raise the risk. High blood pressure is twice as common in adults who are obese than in those who are at a healthy weight and it often leads to heart disease and stroke.

Obese people have far greater chances of developing type 2 diabetes than normal weight people, as it reduces the body’s ability to control blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes may lead to premature death, heart disease, stroke, and blindness.Overweight and obesity are associated with an increased risk for some types of cancer including endometrial, colon, gall bladder, prostate, kidney, and postmenopausal breast cancer.
